A bread knife is usually about 9 inches (23 cm) long and always has a serrated edge. In general their tips are quite blunt, and are sometimes rounded off entirely. Bread knives exist because bread is difficult to slice with any other blade, since it has a resilient crust and delicate innards that can easily get crushed. It is the large serrations of the bread knife that allow it to slice into bread with a minimum of downward pressure. Sadly, bread knives are less versatile than other knives, as their large serrations make it very difficult for them to cleanly slice most other delicate foods.
