Brazilian alcohol made from pure sugar cane (as opposed to rum, which is distilled from molasses), and the national drink of Brazil, which produces some 1 billion litres per annum. It is usually serverd on the rocks or in a caipirinha, made as followsp:

2 1/2 ounce Cachaca
1 lime, cut into wedges
2 teaspoons sugar
stamp the lime wedges and sugar into the bottom of a chilled highball glass. Add the cachaca and stir. Remove the wedges and add a half wedge for garnish.

Drinking cachaca 'on the rocks' is kinda mad (well, if you wanna get REALLY drunk REALLY fast, that's the thing to do -- but your breath's gonna stink like if you drank isopropyl alcohol). A better idea for those who just want to enjoy the burning flavor of cachaca is to mix it with honey or sugar and shoot it inside, real fast.

Some other ideas:

  • bombeirinho
  • caipirinha
  • hi-fi

or just use it instead of tequila ;)
