catecholamine

catecholamine: one of the biogenic amines, including epinephrine, which is both a hormone (adrenaline) and a neurotransmitter; and dopamine, a neurotransmitter. See also biogenic amine; indolamine; dopamine.

Any of many hormones (e.g. epinephrine) that affects the sympathetic nervous system and is a derivative of the steroid catechol, which is derived from the amino acid tyrosine. Such a hormone is also called an "andrenergic amine".
