A complete regular chess set has thirty-two pieces and a playing board. There are variants like 3D chess (like from Star Trek) which may differ. For the playing pieces, there are sixteen pieces of one color and a matching pieces of a different color, typically black and white. The white or lighter pieces have the first move in a match.

The board is an 8 by 8 square checkerboard. Some boards are more elaborate than others, like the limited edition Lord of the Rings chess set with storage for pieces under the playing field in a wooden drawer. The board has a map of Middle Earth under a glass checkerboard with half of the squares frosted to distinguish the board locations.
