A pair of affixes that must be used together, one as a prefix, the other as a suffix (Latin circum 'around').

An example is in the negative in Maltese: hu 'he is', cf. mhux 'he is not'.

Another is in German past participles, as gefragt 'asked' from fragen 'to ask'.

Another is the Tzotzil definite article: vaj 'tortilla', li vaj e 'the tortilla'.
