Common Stock

Securities representing equity ownership in a company.

Common shares let an investor vote on such matters as the election of a board of directors.

They also give the holder a share in a company's profits via dividend payments or capital appreciation of the shares.

Common shares also are lowest on the list of people to get anything after bankruptcy. If a company goes into bankruptcy the common stock is usually wiped out.
