Generally associated with tv game shows, this is an award given to a contestant who did not win first place. Some prizes are better than others. For example, the big winner on Jeopardy! does get to keep the cash, but the other players usually receive decent prizes like electronics, vacations and such. Other game shows give away lame crap like a year's supply of Rice-a-Roni, which has never really been known to console anyone.
