The continental margin is the transitional area between the dry land of the continent and the ocean floor. It primarily consists of the continental shelf, the continental slope, and the continental rise.

Continental margins are the main location of fault lines, which in turn makes them prime spots for underwater volcanoes and can often be the site of major earthquakes when they are structurally unsound.
