A term of purchase, meaning Carriage Paid To. Always followed by a destination name as in "CPT Rotterdam". It means that the seller pays the freight to the destination; but the ownership and risks are transferred to the buyer when the goods are given to the carrier. Notice that in CPT the seller will clear the goods for export.

In practical terms, if you are in Rotterdam and buy a sack of potatoes CPT Rotterdam from a company in Ireland, the company will pay for the shipping of the potatoes to Rotterdam; but if during travel the potatoes sprout or are lost, it is your loss (and consequently your responsibility to get insurance). You will also have to pay any import duty to the Netherlands customs.

Terms of Purchase: FAS, FOB, CIF, EXW, DDP, FCA, CPT
