Not something, but not quite nothing. Not content, but not uncomfortable. Do you remember what happened five minutes ago? Me neither. We look with our faces forward, eyes glazed as we go through life in default condition, on autopilot as it were, doing everything and changing nothing. Get up, work, come home, sleep, repeat.

How was your day?

Oh, alright.

What did you do at school today?

Nothing.

We miss opportunities because we forget about them. We find ourselves childless because the thought never occurred to us. We put off getting the car serviced one more day; it continues to serve its purpose. We do not disrupt the status quo. We never see each other anymore. Do you even know who I am now? I haven't been to a show in months. Is it January already? I paid the bills on time. I don't remember doing it. I am face forward in default condition, missing existence, doing everything and changing nothing.

What do you want to do?

I don't know. What do you want to do?

We get older. Highways go under construction. Strip malls are built. Property value goes down. We pay rent. We lose friends to petty arguments or foreign countries. We loop infinitely in default condition, face forward, never sensing that anything is other than the way it should be. People only do what they know. Doing everything and changing nothing.
