A
Spanish term which translates to "The Disappeared"(which is a reference to the thousands of Argentinian political prisoners who were murdered by their own military in the late '70s and early '80s),
Desaparecidos is a five-person
side project from
Bright Eyes singer/songwriter
Conor Oberst. The band recently released their debut album entitled
Read Music/Speak Spanish on
Saddle Creek Records. The band instantly gains a large number of fans from the Bright Eyes pool, however it's likely to appeal to a wider rock audience as well. Gone are Bright Eyes' trademark accoustic ballads and in place are distorted guitar of
indie rock fashion. Also, Oberst's trademark songs about
depression and
sorrow have been replaced socially conscious,
political lyrics. In "
The Happiest Place on Earth" Oberst sings "I don't want to be ashamed to be
American" like any good
liberal indie rocker would. This could be seen as either a breath of fresh air from a typical Oberst effort, or as a means to reach a wider rock audience. Probably a little of both. A good description of their sound would be a combination of
Weezer(espcially the drumming) and
Jimmy Eat World, only with better lyrical content.
