A euphemism from the library world, meaning to remove an item from the shelves. This is often seen as having something to do with censorship, and (although librarians don't care to admit it) sometimes that motive is involved.

Deselection broadens the term to include weeding, the removal of material because it's not worth the shelf space. Space-related books previous to 1969, for example, have mostly historical and nostalgic value. They might well be deselected in favor of Lost Moon and other books about the space age that were actually written in the space age.
