A nuanced Latin word that has far more meaning than the English word "dignity", which is very obviously derived from dignitas.
In Ancient Rome, dignitas measured a man's personal clout in the entire known Roman world (as opposed to a man's auctoritas which was more a measure of his standing within the city of Rome). A man's dignitas measured the total of his integrity, his pride, family, words, deeds, ancestry, intelligence, ability, and worth as a man. Of all the assets a Roman nobleman possessed, his dignitas was likely to be the one that he was most sensitive about and protective of.
