person who is employed to open the
front door, usually of a large
urban apartment building or
hotel, and
greet residents or customers. They also perform duties like hailing
taxicabs for residents and
shooing the
riffraff away. Doormen typically
dress in a fancy
uniform, with lots of
fringe and
epaulets. They have to be
friendly, 'cause who wants to deal with a
surly doorman?
