Electroporation is a technique used in biotechnology to increase the permeability of cell membranes. It was discovered in the 1970's. The process itself is fairly simple: apply short, intense electrical pulses at an appropriate electric field strength to a live cell, and it will be more receptive to incoming objects. Essentially, abuse it and you can manipulate it.
