Leader of the Númenoreans who escaped the drowning of Númenor. Son of Amandil, who was Lord of Andúnië at the time of Ar-Pharazôn, who resisted the king's apostasy from the Valar. Their family could trace their ancestry down to Silmariën, the daughter and eldest child of the fourth king of Númenor Tar-Elendil, making them of the line of Elros. His sons were Isildur and Anárion, who afterwards became the forefathers of the kings of Gondor and Arnor.

Elendil (the name is Quenya for 'friend of the stars') led the Last Alliance of Men and Elves with Gil-Galad, high king of the Noldor, and was slain by Sauron at the siege of the Barad-dûr. His sword Narsil was broken in the battle, but was later reforged by his descendant Aragorn.
