An area in international waters where the coastal country claiming the EEZ have an exclusive right to the resources in the water. This kind of extended zones were pioneered by Canada and south american countries in the mid seventies, but many others have followed them since that an established EEZs. Today, it is commonly assumed that a costal country have a 200 nautical mile EEZ. The EEZ starts form the same base line as the 2-4 NM national waters start. The EEZ applies only to resources in the water, not minerals on the seabed or oil.
