Refers to a fallacy of logic in argument, specifically one of the Fallacies of Relevance. False cause is also known as post hoc, ergo propter hoc. False cause is at the root of many superstitions.
Example:
Joe walked under a ladder yesterday, and then tripped and broke his foot. Therfore, walking under ladders is bad luck."
