The music composed to, usually, underlie the visuals in a motion picture. Essentially, the purpose of film score is to aid the visuals and timing in the manipulation, guidance, or misdirection of the audience. The best scores act in seamless, barely-noticeable cohesion with a film's direction.

Often referred to, slightly inaccurately, as a film's "soundtrack," that being the overall aural mix or, at worst and most commercial, the pop songs used within a given film.
