First Footing is also a tradition in
Scotland that takes place just after the
turn of the year, ie very very early on
January 1st.
The process of first footing is basically visiting a friend or a neighbour just after the bells bearing a gift of food or drink. In the past this was usually accompanied by a lump of coal (don't ask me why, I've no idea!).
Therefore, if my neighbour was to visit my at 12:05am on January 1st and bring me a drink, then they'd be first footing me.
