In a
flintlock weapon, the
frizzen is the
metal, (
iron or
steel), plate that the
flint strikes when the
trigger is pulled.
The sparks created by this impact ignite the primer charge of the firearm which, in turn, should ignite the main charge and cause the weapon to fire.
