In short, a traditional communal dance-thing, specific to the Gujarat region of India, occuring during Navratri (literally: "the nine nights", part of the Diwali festival, the Hindu New Year, usually in October or November). While an Indian phenomenon, the large number of Indian immigrants in the US, esp. in areas like New Jersy, New York, Chicago, and Houston, have started to host Garbas in their cities. In a Garba, people form many concentric cicles and dance, usually in alternation directions (so outer circle goes clockwise, inner circle goes counter clockwise). Generally, there is also a Rass, in which people take dandyas (literally: sticks) and dance.
