The head string is the line on a pool table that runs across the table (perpendicular to the long sides) intersecting the head spot, seperating the table at one-quarter. The area behind the head string (the smaller area) is called the kitchen.

In most games of pool, the cue ball must be placed in the kitchen prior to a legal break. In these situations, the object ball of the next shot must not be in the kitchen.
