A hybrid power system has two or more ways to generate electricity. This is most obviously useful when one system works intermittently.

Suppose an electric utility owns both wind turbines and natural gas turbines. When the wind is blowing, they could sell electricity from the wind turbines. When it isn't, there would be no brownouts, since they could fire up the natural gas powered turbines.
