The
universe is believed to have undergone a
period of rapid (
exponential) expansion prior to
baryogenisis and
reionisation. This is
termed
inflation.
One method to produce inflation is to have the
dynamics of the universe dominated by a
cosmological constant. This can be achieved by introducing
a scalar field with the appropriate potential.
A scalar field with the correct potential form is called
an Inflaton.
