Introns are segments of DNA coding that are within the "coding region" of a gene but do not code for amino acid sequences / protein synthesis. These segments are present prior to splicing but are currently thought to contain no useful information. Some speculate that the introns are the inactive detritus left behind in our DNA by long-ago invading viruses, which use RNA for their own coding. Compare exon.
