Lateral thinking in problem solving often includes looking for loopholes or alternate interpretations in the instructions or ruleset. Unlike cheating, lateral thinking arrives at a satisfactory conclusion without having harnessed resources (besides cognition) unavailable to others who may be faced with the same problem.
