This is a muscle in your mouth that is attached to your soft palate. The muscle elevates, retracts and laterally deviates the soft palate. It may (it's unknown) open the auditory tube when you swallow. Go ahead, swallow some of your saliva and you may feel a slight pressure in your ear. I do. Maybe I'm weird.
