Lucius Shepard is an excellent science fiction writer on so many levels. He is at least as good as Iain M. Banks in his treatment of science, and has a better understanding of his characters and their motivations.

His first book was Green Eyes, a story about a man who has been 'reanimated' from death as a zombie as part of a scientific experiment -- recombinant DNA involved with bacteria provides the body with some consciousness and memory, although the person who comes back is most certainly the one who died.

Since then, he's written Life During Wartime, The Golden, The Father of Stones, The Ends of the Earth and several other books. He's very good at writing unsympathetic protagonists, fucked up authority figures, and situations which are just really, really bad.
