Used often in chemistry, a magnetic stirrer is a small bar magnet enclosed in plastic. The stirrer is placed in a flask containing some solution, which is then put on top of a hot plate with a stirring circuit. When the dial is turned, the circuit within the hot plate begins to create an alternating magnetic field, which makes the stirrer spin. This spinning motion mixes the solution with vigor, and no stirring rod or human intervention is necessary.
