An unusual and original treat for Samhain, these can be packed in small bags and given to trick-or-treaters, or used as part of a Samhain or Halloween party.

Melt shortening in saucepan on low. Add sugar and molasses. Beat egg and add; stir. Put in large bowl. In small bowl, mix flour, baking soda, and spices, stirring until blended. Add to molasses mix. Chill 1-2 hours.

Preheat oven to 350ºF. Roll dough on wax paper (floured) to ¼ inch. Grease 3 baking sheets. Cut with cookie cutters. Sprinkle with sugar. Bake 8-10 minutes. Remove and let cool for 5 minutes on wire racks.

Yield: 3 dozen
