A small, simple building that has no walls, and is characterized by a circular platform, called a tribune, which serves as a base for a single ring of columns supporting a domed roof. The literal translation of the word is 'single wing'. Originally an early Greek temple structure built to cover a statue or altar, the monopteros has become to some extent analogous to the modern gazebo, and is still used today in parks and manicured gardens.
