I shall not always turn back at the corner
Retracing my steps with obedient feet
No- I shall stand for a moment to feel the wind blowing
Whisper of distances secret and dim
Away where the road has gone, far past the corner…
And then I shall go
I won't always return
Tho' you wait in the lamplight, quietly lifting
Your face to the glass of the window to see
Set out the table and lay the bread steaming
Leaving the oven to keep the room warm
Take out my old bathrobe and warm woolen slippers
'For he will be cold after walking so long…'
And then you will hear - great wings in the darkness
Or is it the sound of the wind rushing by?
And you'll say,'But he only went down to the corner
'Just down to the corner: and he always comes home.'
