A famous turn of phrase from Thomas Hobbes, describing the lives of individuals "in a state of nature": "... solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short." Hobbes argued that people were selfish, and only through government by absolute monarchy were people to be protected from their own selfishness and evil.
Extending this idea resulted in Jeremy Bentham's principle of utility.
