A negative symptom in schizophrenia is a lack of what would be considered "normal" behaviour. Lack of emotion, meaning in their words, and so on. Contrast this with a positive symptom, which is the presence of "abnormal" behaviour.

Examples:
Flat affect, poverty of speech.
