osvensk

Osvensk is a Swedish word, literally meaning "un-Swedish". It can be used to refer to foreign customs and culture, either neutrally or depreciatory. What is interesting about it, however, is that it is also used in a positive and approving sense.

This positive sense alludes to the self-image of Swedes as introverted, self-restrained, bureaucratic herd-people who don't want to stick out, take risks, or show any open feelings. The quintessential unswedish person is the (perhaps mythical) Mediterranean: self-assured, outspoken, lively, daring. For some reason, carefree and unproblematic consumption of alcohol is also often considered an unswedish attribute, as opposed to the poor Swede who when he finally manages to get hold of some overtaxed booze from the government monopoly store is prone to guzzle it all up and pass out in a street corner.

From time to time, ironic and/or enraged comments are heard about this little piece of national self-deprecation that somehow has infiltrated dictionaries and usage. Personally I rather view it as a refreshing exception to the myopically nationalistic self-righteousness that seems to be the norm around the world -- although it is hard to argue that it is anything more than an isolated instance. Still, the contrast with un-American is notable...

I Sverige finns många fina, härliga idrottande kvinnor som känns väldigt osvenska i sitt tävlande och som kanske just därför har hamnat överst på prispallen i inte bara svenska tävlingar utan också internationella. Osvenska så till vida att de mot alla odds och gamla föreställningar om att svensk vinnarinstinkt inte är tillräcklig, faktiskt vinner, och fortsätter att vinna, bli bättre, utvecklas.
There are many good, wonderful female athletes in Sweden who have a very "unswedish" feel and perhaps for that very reason have placed themselves highly not only in Swedish competitions but also internationally. Because that's what it sounds like. A Swede should apologize for being Swedish and as far as possible act like a non-Swede, thereby being wonderfully unswedish. Bloody bullshit.
