Can be either good or bad depending. If you say "he's my idol", then it's good. But if you say "he's very idol-ish" then you are saying the person in question has little musical talent but rather is just good looking- a good example would be any of the "four heavenly kings" of Cantopop, particularly Leon Lai, who even though he is a bad dancer and mediocre singer, is popular for his good looks.
