A percussion instrument native to Puerto Rico roughly the shape of a tamborine but has a much deeper sound (similar to that of a conga). It is used in the music known as Bomba y Plena. There are three types in all: Punteador, Seguidor, and Requinto.
All panderos are played using just one hand and holding them with the other. The Seguidor is a small exception because of the unique way it is held: along the arm with one edge against the chest and the hand grabbing the opposite edge with the fingers lightly resting on the skin of the drum. These fingers can be used to add extra beats while playing, creating many more wonderful rythms.
