Portland seems to have embraced its airport code to an extent not equalled in any other city. Upon deplaning, passangers are greeted by signs proclaiming "Welcome to PDX." (The word portland is not even mentioned.) Hungry passengers can make their way to the PDX foodcourt for a snack, before heading to Powell's PDX for a book or magazine. Leaving the aiport, a large street sign says "Thank you for visiting PDX." (Once again, "portland" is suspiciously absent.)

Stranger still is the URL for Portland State University: www.pdx.edu.

What medryn says about Portland embracing its airport code is frighteningly true, but there's more—its use stretches well outside of the airport and can be used to refer to the city as a whole. Just the other day, I was talking to P_I about the Horny E2 Portland Conflagration, and confused him by using "Portland" and "PDX" interchangeably. I explained to him that we referred to the city by its airport code, and he replied, "We here in YVR don't do that." Yet another tidbit contributing to the ever-increasing mass of evidence of the utterly bizarre insanity of us Portlanders.
