The more appropriate name for this festival is the Kanamara Matsuri Festival. Annually, in
Kawasaki,
Japan, an 8-foot penis is brought out from the
Shinto shrine to be celebrated in the streets. Very few people know about this festival because government and tourism officials in Japan want to keep this sealed away from the public (mostly because of its religious holdings, which really would confuse the point with tourists coming to see a giant penis for kicks).
The penis is celebrated as the sign of fertility (and later that year to celebrate again, is a vagina festival). It is, which may apall some Americans and conservative people, a family event. Large phalluses parade the street, penis candy, and my favorite, people dressed in famous cartoon character costumes with gigantic erections.
Is celebrated on April 15th yearly.
