Peter Brook is regarded as one of the most important and influential theater directors today. He has also garnered wide praise as a theoretician on the usage and importance of theater. These ideas are explored in his novels The Empty Space and The Shifting Point.

Over the course of his fourty year career Brook has served as a director for the Royal Shakespeare Company and is a former head of the International Centre of Theatre Research in Paris. Some of his more well known productions include King Lear, The Tempest, The Tragedy of Carmen, Marat/Sade, US, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and The Cherry Orchard. There are over fifty productions in all.

In film he has directed Lord of the Flies, King Lear,The Mahabharata, and Marat/Sade among others.
