A phon, in acoustics, is the measure of "loudness" of a specific sound. Phons are the loudness (the decibel level) of any sound at 1 kHz (kilohertz), as sounds of different pitch, although of the same volume, can be perceived to be louder/quieter. For example, volume of one sound can be "masked" by a sound of a similar frequency.
