Salute to the Resident of the Homeland on a Black and Bloody Day!

CURIOUS GEORGE

winds of war blow again
death opens its ravenous maw
its putrid stench creeps across the land
to every secret hiding place
sparing no child, no mother’s plea
no mercy brooked the children of time

gone are the days of leisure
sitting by the pool, cocktail in hand
days of tennis and cabriolets
tanning salons, fake nails, breast implants
cannot save us now
from Palm Springs to Death Valley
the party’s over

Curious George, once a cute little monkey
furrowed brow, perplexed
now howling and pounding his chest
he has come of age
a primate of destiny
as generals shine their brass
politicians practice speeches
hissing threat of war
