The ideal of
self-rule or self-mastery, according to philosopher
Isaiah Berlin, who wrote on "Two Concepts of
Liberty". This is the belief that any
obstacles or
restrictions we have are
limits we impose upon ourselves.
Jean Jacques Rousseau, a philosopher who
influenced the likes of
Karl Marx and
Immanuel Kant, might say that this is the best way for
freedom to exist. However, positive freedom can lead to
tyranny if "giving up freedom for the good of the community" is taken to
extremes.
