[L. practicus active. Cf. Practice.]

The practical part of a term of study (commonly for teachers) spent in the workplace under the supervision of a working practitioner. A practicum allows the student to build competence through work experience, and to observe professional performance in the field. Typically, the student receives no compensation, unlike an internship or similar program. Hours and duration of a practicum vary by educational institution.
