In early earth history, the seas contained vast quantities of primitive organic molecules.

Atoms and molecules self assembled according to thermodynamic principles.

At some point, lightning struck and a molecule was formed that had the ability to replicate itself.

The odd mix of various chemicals, both organic and inorganic, that collected on the surface of the early earth, and eventually resulted in the formation of life. However, it didn't happen quicky, but in many many steps.

Creationists, who believe that everything just appeared after god said so, say the odds are way too much against this. They say this because they expect to see DNA form directly from a random batch of inorganic elements.
