Psy"cho"so"mat"ic (adjective)

Of or related to a disorder showing physical symptoms arising from a mental condition.

In layman's terms, you think something is wrong with you, and therefore it is. Very much related to the idea of a placebo, in which people are given a drug that does nothing, told it will do them good and solely through this assumption, it seems to have positive effects. A psychosomatic condition is in many respects the opposite, as the subject so strongly believes that there is something wrong with them, that physical symptoms appear.

Similar to, but certainly not the same as, hypochondria, in which a patient is preoccupied with imaginary illnesses - a psychosomatic condition can certainly lead to real problems: high levels of stress leading to ulcers, for example.

From Greek psykhe- meaning "mind" (see psyche) and somatikos, from soma meaning "body". First recorded use 1863.
