In cigar jargon, a puro (Spanish for "pure") is a cigar that has all three components (the filler, the binder, and the wrapper) made from tobacco leaves originating from a single country. Most cigars are not puros; a typical cigar may have a wrapper from the Dominican Republic and binder and filler from Nicaragua. Each type of leaf comes with its own flavor and strength of nicotine due to the soil and climate it's grown in—for example, Nicaraguan tobacco tends to be spicy and peppery, while Connecticut Shade tobacco is usually milder and sweeter—so puros are an easy way to discover one's favorite variety of tobacco or to indulge in one's favorite flavors.
