The name given to dry land created by human endeavour out of water-covered areal. The name 'reclaimed' land is actually somewhat misleading, since it implies that it was once land before. Even though this may be the case on a geological timescale, usually 'reclaimed land' is created out of sea- or lake-areal which has not been dry for centuries or eons. The Netherlands is a good example of a country where reclaimed land makes up a large proportion of the total land areal. The Dutch word for reclaimed land is 'polder'.
