Red dog is a residue from burned coal dumps that are composed of various waste products incidental to coal mining. Under pressure in these waste dumps, the waste frequently ignites from spontaneous combustion (think of the grounds on the movie Nothing but Trouble), producing a red-colored ash, which is used for driveways, parking lots, and some roads.
